Wrapping Up My 22-Year Goals

In the words of Sia, “I’m aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiivvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!” I know that I’ve been M.I.A. for quite some time, but I’ve committed to getting back into blogging. To show how committed I’ve become, I’m planning on publishing a few posts within a few days. Yes, you heard me right; I will be posting more than once per month! But before I get into the swing of things, I want to wrap up my goals from my year as a twenty-two-year-old.

I didn’t complete all of them (more details on that below), but I wanted to give a quick summary of the goals that I accomplished but didn’t get the chance to write about.

Volunteer more | I set this goal because I wanted to see a more humanitarian side of myself emerge since I tend to be overly self-focused (hence the reason that I have a blog entirely devoted to my life). I initially went a little crazy volunteering for anything and everything that had openings (The American Red Cross, a horse ministry that required me to show up at 5:00 a.m. to feed, etc.). But after quickly realizing that I had overcommitted, I ended up settling on a non-profit called Clothes That Work (an organization that assists people who are searching for jobs with interview prep, workplace attire, and lectures). They have a volunteer position where I am able to give presentations on topics ranging from etiquette to professional social media usage.

I have been working with this non-profit since January, and I have loved every moment of the experience. I am grateful because volunteering has given me a chance to expand my worldview while meeting some incredible people.

Reintroduce running into my life in a healthy way | Last year I had to stop training for a marathon because of severe knee pain. Being cheap, I never had the issue examined by a doctor and instead just stopped running altogether. My knee pain vanished as a result, but I missed running more and more as time passed. That changed during a conversation that I had one day.

I was in the office talking with one of my coworkers, who is a part-time track and field coach, and I explained my knee issue to her. Long story short, she informed me that I was wearing the wrong running shoes which were, in turn, causing me the knee pain. Her solution was for me to go to a running store and get fitted with shoes that would match my running style.

I walked out of the fitting with a new pair of shoes and a ton of excitement as I prepared to get back into a habit that I had so thoroughly enjoyed. Since then, I have been able to run without pain, and even though I am no longer training for such a long distance, I feel just as accomplished when I run a few miles.

Develop an appreciation for art | This was a bit of a scary goal for me because I have had an aversion to art for so long, but I figured that it would be good to grow to appreciate it as I get older.

I began working on this goal by figuring out what kind of art I enjoy. I went to museums in various cities and took note of the works of art that stood out to me. It was after a few trips to museums that I started to see a pattern. I was drawn to art that was modern and made a statement (i.e., Joan Mitchell, Hans Hofmann, etc.). With this style in mind, I asked an artist friend to create a few pieces for my office and home. She took my vision and created stunning pieces that I am thrilled to display.

I am by no means an art expert and still struggle to name the correct style of the works that I admire, but I do know that I have an appreciation for art that was non-existent when I first set this goal.

Improve my writing | It makes sense that I would create a goal that has to do with writing since it is my medium of communication on this blog. I wanted to work on bettering my use of grammar during this past year, so I started with something as simple as installing Grammarly, a program that works to correct over 400 grammatical errors as you write.

Using this program every time I write an email, a Facebook status, or a blog post has given me insight into the common errors that I make and how to correct them. It has not made me a Pulitzer Prize-level author by any stretch of the imagination, but it has improved my writing by leaps and bounds.

So there you have it, my goals as a twenty-two-year-old. I didn’t complete all fifteen that I had initially planned on accomplishing, but I am not beating myself up for that. This past year has been full of career adjustment, changing living situations, and a packed schedule.

Do I wish that I had successfully completed every goal? Yes, but I am grateful to have completed the ones that I did and to have a new year stretching before me with ample opportunity to set and complete goals.
